THING

With this eleventh edition, attenuation circuit continues its series of four-way split albums called THING. The aim is to provide a medium for exchange and presentation of a great variety of artists. As each artist spreads the copies to their network, listeners also get to know the other artists featured on the same disc. The title references the fact that the CDs are physical objects – things! – but also refers to the 'thing' or 'ding' in old Norse and other Germanic languages, which designates the place of a popular assembly or the assembly itself and thus alludes to the 'meeting-place' character of the albums on (or around) which the four artists and their audiences meet, if only virtually.
This THING could be labelled a ‚dark ambient‘ album, but only in so far as it tries to stretch the limits of such categorisation as far as possible. NYM’s untitled track combines laminar ambient sounds with field recordings, seemingly of natural origin, and runs a sort of psychoacoustic test in which listeners have to decide whether they’re inside or outside the soundscape. Vojenská Nemocnice’s „Hate You Hate You“ also employs found footage, this time of human voices, and the title combined with the fact that the project name references a hospital in Brno, place the „cinema for the ears“ invoked in listeners’ heads firmly in the horror genre. Guiguisuisui feat. Anzhi depart from classic ambient structures in favour of a kind of artificial ritual music, as if „The Light of the Hanged Man’s Hand“ were a setting to music of a grueling folktale from the Himalayas, on whose folklore the London/China-based project draws in their work. „Something Follows“ by Andreas Rönnquist is a great choice for an opening track, not only because of the meta-pun (unless an album only has one track, ‚something follows‘ every opening track, namely, the second track :-)), but rather because the more abstract, mononchrome sound of his drone composition puts the listeners’ mind into a contemplative mood that supports the reception of the following tracks.

NIEUWE NOTEN
Nummer elf begint met ‘Something Follows’ van Rönnquist. Een trage stroom gruizige klanken van bijna een kwartier, waarin opvallend weinig gebeurt, hooguit neemt soms de intensiteit wat toe of af, Het neemt niet weg dat Rönnquist beslist een spannend stuk heeft gecreëerd. Guiguisuisui, een Engels-Chinees duo dat bestaat uit Dann Gaymer en Nan Guazi, maakte The Light of the Hanged Man’s Hand in samenwerking met Anzhi, geen idee wie daar verder achter schuilgaat. Het is in ieder geval een boeiend stuk waarin het drietal dark ambient vermengt met Chinese volksmuziek, met name die uit de Himalaya en psychedelische klanken. Boeiend is dat er voorbij de zesde minuut ook nog ritmische noise naar binnen kruipt, wat het stuk tot meer maakt dan pure dark ambient. Achter NYM, hier vertegenwoordigt met een niet nader genoemd stuk, gaat Sascha Stadlmeier schuil, de man achter dit label. Net als zoveel anderen heeft ook hij voor ieder genre dat hij binnen de elektronica beoefent een ander alias, NYM is die voor dark ambient, EXEDO, zie hiervoor ‘THING 12’, die voor noise. Ook dit stuk bestaat voor iets meer dan de helft uit een constante stroom klanken, met een vrij hoge, dominante drone als rode draad, tot het op enig moment rustiger wordt, boeiend hier zijn de golvende, duistere klanken, in combinatie met in deze context wat vreemd aandoende vogelgeluiden. Een botsing van twee verschillende muzikale sferen. Tot slot rest nog ‘Hate You Hate You’ van Vojenská Nemocnice, het alias van Klaus Mike Hübner. Spookachtige klanknevels hier, sterk vervormde stemmen en ondefinieerbare en regelmatig verontrustende geluiden.

BAD ALCHEMY
Die formidable Quartett-Reihe THING bringt auf ACUF 1011 (CDr) 'Something Follows' von Andreas Rönnquist. Der Schwede hat das Jahr 2025 elementar markiert mit Luft („From Pure Air“) und mit Feuer („Lowering the Perforator into the Volcano“, „Feeding the Fire“). Und Gegenstand von „The Fourth State“ ist ebenfalls ein Zustand, kein Staat. In 'Something Follows' scheint dröhnender Smog einen folkloresken Frauenchor zu vernebeln. Guiguisuisui (Dann Gaymer + Nan Guazi), ein halb chinesisches Projekt in London mit einem Hang zum Enchantment (BA 101), ist bei 'The Light of the Hanged Man's Hand' verbunden mit Anzhi. Dräuende Schläge und alarmierende, pfeifende, schrillende Klänge dramatisieren dröhnenden Sound. Insekten surren wie Luren, Wasser und Wind rauschen und brausen. NYM (wie Emerge oder Exedo ein Pseudonym von Sascha Stadlmeier) knüpft daran an mit dunklem Dröhnen, hellem Brausen, übertriebenem Vogelgezwitscher, klopfenden Schlagfolgen. Als Insichwiderspruch und Nichtidylle, in der dann auch noch ein grollendes Röhren loopt. Vojenská Nemocnice, Militärkrankenhaus (speziell das historische in Brno), so nennt sich Klaus Mike Hübner, ein nach Jihlava (CZ) übersiedelter Sachse, der mit „Katzenmusik“, den „Träumen des Oberstufenlehrers Hlavá“ - am Gymnázium Jihlava? - und ukrainischer Melancholie doch nicht die Leere und das Nichts überdecken konnte. 'Hate You Hate You' mulmt und kreist in ungutem, dumpfem Lo-Fi, mit einer Spieluhr in alptraumhafter Zeitlupe, Atemzügen, steinigen Schlägen, jauligen Impulsen, scharrendem Griffel, einer Männerstimme in verzerrt hallendem Big-Brotherisch.
