THING
by Daniele Virgilio I {AN} EeL I Föräldrarna I Gerald Fiebig feat. Carl E. Ricé
With this fourteenth edition, attenuation circuit continues its series of four-way split albums called THING. The aim is to provide a medium for exchange and presentation of a great variety of artists. As each artist spreads the copies to their network, listeners also get to know the other artists featured on the same disc. The title references the fact that the CDs are physical objects – things! – but also refers to the 'thing' or 'ding' in old Norse and other Germanic languages, which designates the place of a popular assembly or the assembly itself and thus alludes to the 'meeting-place' character of the albums on (or around) which the four artists and their audiences meet, if only virtually.
This edition of THING presents a great variety of approaches to what could be categorised as ambient. But then again, categorisation is not the primary concern here. What can be ascretained is that the contributing artists hail from Italy, Sweden, Canada, and Germany.
Daniele Virgilio is a sound artist, architect, and urban planner with a PhD in urban planning. His research is currently focused on the relationship between sound and place.
Jonas Juuso from the Barents region of Northern Sweden makes electroacoustic music and noise under the moniker Föräldrarna, as well as IDM-techno under the name Cissi III. He runs a small underground label called Maskinpark and also makes harsh noise under the name Överkörd. Jonas has also worked in health care for 15 years.
{An} Eel is an experimental artist based in Cottage Country, Canada. A long time participant in the DIY International scene (born out of Mail Art days), they practice in a variety of genres with a focus on collaboration, improvisation, and voice.
Carl E. Ricé (1947-2024) was a German poet. His friend and literary executor, the sonic artist Gerald Fiebig, composed this piece from the text of Ricé's poem "Tanzen" using the Chant software (waterplea.com/chant/) and a recording of Ricé himself reciting his poem. The English translation of the poem is as follows: "Dancing / diffusing myself / to forget Yesterday / and not / to / fear / Tomorrow // cry / with the wind / across the dunes / the blood / seeps // away // be silent / if you can / when the earth goes cold / the embers / burn me."
