Diese Anmut von Trophäen

by BU.D.D.A.

Bu.d.d.A. (Bund des dritten Auges) was born accidentally – in a dark room in Barcelona. It evolved quietly until Sascha Stadlmeier (EMERGE) and Chris Sigdell (B°TONG) took Bu.d.d.A. on the road and started to take the project seriously. This resulted not only in various EPs, split releases and compilation tracks, but also in a bona fide album which you can hold in your hand and put in your player. What's inside? Mesmerising ambient music!

Bu.d.d.A. is Sascha Stadlmeier and Chris Sigdell doing the unexpected... playing real instruments! "Diese Anmut von Trophäen" ("This grace of trophies" in German) features not only trademark Bu.d.d.A. tracks, but also guest appearances by such illustrious figures as Bees from COMMON EIDER KING EIDER, DREKKA and BEBAWINIGI. Think of Earth meets Troum together with Brian Eno on LSD...

"Diese Anmut von Trophäen" is released by the joint efforts of Zhelezobeton Distribution Division (Russia) and attenuation circuit (Germany). Available on cassette, CD and in digital formats.

For this album, co-released by attenuation circuit and Zhelezobeton, Bu.d.d.A. (Chris Sigdell aka b°tong and Sascha Stadlmeier aka EMERGE) have invited a number of international guests, including Bebawinigi from Italy as well as Drekka and Bees (Common Elder and King Elder) from the USA.

Rooted in the core duo of b°tong on guitar (this time more plucked than bowed) and synthesizers and EMERGE on violin, plus effects and field recordings, this release gains additional dimensions by adding the mournful piano work of Drekka – who is also credited with 'rain', and anyone who's ever seen Blade Runner will testify to the fact how much the sound of rain can contribute to an atmosphere. Vocals, too, are a new addition to Bu.d.d.A.'s sonic palette. Both the contributions of Bees and Bebawinigi avoid lyrics and traditional melodies, yet while the humming chant of Bees supports the drone structure of the piece, highly expressive female vocalist Bebawinigi turns loose one of her energetic multi-tracked outbursts and gently, but decidedly sets the atmosphere on fire, supported by guitarist b°tong, whose experience as a stoner rock guitarist in the band Leaden Fumes comes in handy at this point. All in all, Bu.d.d.A. on this album refine their common musical language and at the same time depart in several exciting new directions at once. The final piece by the duo alone, more rhythmic than any Bu.d.d.A. piece so far, even takes b°tong and EMERGE into some sort of free rock territory, a great promise of things to come.

BAD ALCHEMY

VITAL WEEKLY

Bund Des Dritten Auges is what the acronym Bu.d.d.A. stands for. It is the duo of Sascha Stadlmeier (also known as Emerge) and Chris Sigdell (B*Tong). I only heard their debut release (Vital Weekly 1203), but there have been some releases since then. So, it's not a one-off collaboration, but an ongoing concern, and the two are regular on the road. Instead of their solo work, which relies heavily on electronics, they play instruments here. Stadlmeier plays the violin, electronics, field recordings and voice, and Sigdell, electric guitar, bowed guitar, synthesizer, vocals and samples. This duo has a selling point: "Think of Earth meets Troum with Brian Eno on LSD..." That is something I can relate to. Of course, the music is not exactly like those musicians, but it is possible to see where it all comes from. The guitar as a starting point, but soon covered with sound effects and samples so that a psychedelic sound appears. That is a vastness that we also know from Troum. I think that Bu.d.d.A. shares most with Troum, especially in the two long pieces that bookend this release. The addition of guest players, Bees from Common Eider King Eider, Drekka and Bebawinigi on various tracks deliver some exciting extras. Especially the voice of Bebawinigi on 'Entenei' is quite haunting. This piece is a jam festival of voices, violin and chaos; you won't see this on the next Brian Eno record. Massive music here, all dark and heavy, but it never collapses under this weight.
