FLOW
by KLONK I ANJA KREYSING I EMERGE
release date August 5th
All tracks on this 3-way split album were composed for Flow, a project by Dr Martina Cecchetto, with the scientific contribution of Dr Florian Betz and the artistic curation of Riccardo Fumagalli, in collaboration with Cities & Memory, the University of Padua (Italy), and the University of Würzburg (Germany). This geographical research project charts the river Lech from its source in the Austrian Alps to the point where it flows into the Danube. During the project, field recordings of some 25 segments of the river Lech were made (hence the "segment 19" in Anja Kreysing's title) and given to audio artists for artistic treatment, along with satellite images of the river (one of which was used for the cover). More on the project and the contributing artists from around the world can be found on artmusicscience.substack.com. The Substack also contains short podcast episodes with interviews with EMERGE, Anja Kreysing, and KLONK about their tracks.
Seeking to distribute the open call for Flow, curator Riccardo Fumagalli searched Bandcamp for acts/labels based near the river Lech. As the Lech flows right through the city of Augsburg, where attenuation circuit is based, the label showed up in his research and was contacted by Riccardo with a request to spread the call. Three of the label's artists responded with the compositions that are now collected on this album.
In addition to a long list of releases on attenuation circuit, several of them in collaboration with label head EMERGE, Anja Kreysing from Münster has already contributed to earlier art/science projects in the Cities & Memory programme. EMERGE was allocated a field recording from a weir (hence the title) and used the rather noisy quality of the falling water to create a very dense track. Like EMERGE, the duo KLONK (Tine Klink and Gerald Fiebig) are locally based and familiar with the river and thus were able to add their own hydrophone recordings and field recordings to their composition. Following occasional contributions to compilations, this is KLONK's first appearance on a physical release by attenuation circuit.
